Space, the final frontier…

Territoriality is the establishment and maintenance of space that you claim for your personal use.  There are three different types of territoriality.  One is primary territory, which is space that you own or have principal control over.  Examples of primary territory are your home, bedroom, work space, and car.  How you decorate and maintain these spaces help others to form an opinion of you.  Next is secondary territory, which is space that is established as your own through repeated use.  When you walk into COM114 you probably always sit in the same seat.  This is your secondary territory and if someone takes your seat you probably become agitated because that spot is known to you as “yours.”  The last kind of territory is called public territory.  It is space open to everyone, but available for your sole temporary occupancy.  Examples of public territory are park benches and movie theater seats.
